The Interrogational style of Khawaja Mir Dard's poetry

Abstract

Interrogative style of poetry used in the Ghazals of Khawaja Mir Dard describe various  topics of life and the universe, characterized by the rich qualities of Ghazals such as simplicity,  modesty, sentimentalism, and fascination. He has adopted an intriguing interrogative style in Urdu Ghazal poetry, which covers a range of traditional topics such as Sufism, divine and mundane love, the philosophy of beauty and passion, the meaninglessness of life, the eternity of death, and the philosophy of sorrows and happiness. This style includes the use of imperative, affirmative, and negative queries to explore these themes in depth. Irrespective of the topic, incorporation of purity and cleanliness in his poetry, reveals his true, spiritual and passionate nature. His investigative approach, combined with a sense of curiosity, exploration, confusion and scepticism, delves into the intricacies of realities which cause tranquility of heart and equanimity of mind.  Mir Dard's interrogative style of poetry made him stand out among his contemporaries.  Undoubtedly, his interrogative style of poetry has earned him a prominent position among the Urdu Ghazal poets, thereby elevating the significance of Urdu poetry as a whole.
