Abstract

In northern India, Mehr Chand Khatri Mehr transformed ‘Nau Aieen e Hindi’ into easy, simple, fluent and everyday language, by which he introduced such a style in narrative literature which was the best masterpiece of his creative writing. This story also serves as a base for modern Urdu prose. Mehr has used all the features of verbal narrative using technique of storytelling. Here we find that the story and characters are based on imagination and fantasy. The animal characters possess meanings of wisdom and self-discipline. Undoubtedly, Mehr formulated basic aspects of modern Urdu prose along with simple and fluent style of writing prior to the literature of Fort William College. However, this story remained unknown to the literary world, due to which it could not get the recognition it deserved. Syed Salman Hussain compiled this story and exposed it to the literary world.
