Abstract

This article explores the literary relationship between Chiragh Hasan Hasrat and Naseer Husain Khayal with a focus on the ways in which Hasrat’s editorial vision and Khayal’s creative prose intersected to enrich Urdu literature. By situating Khayal’s prose writings within the cultural and intellectual milieu of Aaftab, the journal edited by Hasrat, the study highlights how the periodical became a formative platform for Khayal’s emergence as a distinctive prose stylist. The article further examines Hasrat’s role not only as a critic and mentor but also as an enabler who recognized Khayal’s potential and offered him visibility in the Urdu literary public sphere. In turn, Khayal’s contributions reinforced the relevance of Aaftab as a space for experimentation and innovation in Urdu prose. Through this exploration, the article establishes Khayal’s importance in the broader trajectory of Urdu prose writing and underscores the editorial interventions of Hasrat as a significant factor in shaping literary production in early twentieth-century India.
