Abstract

Shehzad Ahmed (1936–2012) holds a distinguished position in modern Urdu Ghazal. From the creation of Pakistan till the contemporary era, the various phases through which Urdu Ghazal has evolved are effectively reflected in the poetic universe of Shehzad Ahmed. He was a well-read and broad-minded poet who, through the influence of modern disciplines such as physics, psychology, and philosophy, expanded the scope of Urdu poetry and enriched the Ghazal with intellectual novelty at the thematic level. The present article particularly attempts to explore and analyze the thematic diversity found in Shehzad Ahmed’s Ghazals, so that a better understanding of his poetic dimension may emerge.
